Hospital Sibu started operations in 1994. Previously, the medical needs of Sibu town was served by the Lau King Howe Hospital in downtown area. However, the old hospital soon grew too small for the growing population of the town. In view of this as well as the need for a more equipped hospital that could serve as referral centre for the Central Region of Sarawak, the federal government started construction on the present hospital. Sibu Hospital has the capacity for 750 beds but currently the official bed count is 534. It is a referral hospital for the District Hospitals along the Rejang basin and also Mukah, Saratok and Bintulu Hospital. It provides basic speciality and a few sub speciality inpatient services. There are a wide range of outpatient specialist services. A number of sub speciality services are provided by visiting specialists from Kuching such as Nephrology, Cardiology and Neurosurgery.
